A chaotic swing from cold to drought is reshaping horticulture, closing sunflower fields and forcing water restrictions across the Northern Hemisphere.
The 2026 growing season has dealt gardeners a quiet, creeping heartbreak unlike any single frost or pest outbreak. Borders that were planted with expectation never filled in. Fields sown in hope remained locked and empty. Across Britain—and beyond—the problem was not one extreme event but a jarring sequence of them: a cold, sodden spring with no gentle transition, followed by record-shattering heatwaves that arrived weeks ahead of schedule.
The result, horticulturists warn, may be the shape of summers to come.
A Spring That Never Arrived
The year began with relentless rain. Parts of the United Kingdom recorded one of the wettest starts in more than a century, leaving soil waterlogged and seeds struggling to establish roots. Then, almost without a proper spring, the temperature lurched upward dramatically.
On May 26, Kew Gardens recorded 35.1°C (95.2°F) —smashing the nation’s previous May temperature record by more than two degrees. June became England’s warmest on record. By late June, a red extreme-heat warning—only ever issued once before, in 2021—was in effect for three consecutive days as temperatures threatened 40°C (104°F).
For plants, the timing proved devastating. Seeds and seedlings that had barely taken hold in cold, wet soil were forced, within weeks, to endure drought stress and scorching sun before developing root systems capable of surviving. Horticulturists describe plants “skipping” entire growth stages—rushing to flower and set seed prematurely, or simply dying before blooming at all.
Sandringham, Sunflowers, and a Strained Industry
The Royal Horticultural Society, steward of five major public gardens across England, has acknowledged this is no longer an anomaly. Citing last year’s severe droughts, the RHS has committed to a series of emergency water-management projects through 2026, including rainwater storage tanks, “ebb and flow” irrigation benches, rain gardens, and a campaign encouraging home gardeners to adopt similar measures. The organization, built on the ideal of the reliably beautiful English garden, is now planning for water scarcity as a permanent condition.
The disruption has hit far beyond show gardens. In Suffolk, organisers of the Horringer Sunflower Field near Bury St Edmunds announced they would not open this year at all. The field proved too large to irrigate, and weeks of hoping for rain produced nothing. “We are absolutely gutted,” the organisers said, “but we are hopeful for 2027.” Suffolk was then under a hosepipe ban after three consecutive heatwaves left ground too dry to sustain the crop.
By mid-July, more than eight million UK households were living under hosepipe restrictions. Water companies including Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, South East Water, and Southern Water imposed bans—several for the first time in decades. Gardeners were advised to rely on water butts, greywater from baths and washing-up bowls, and heavy mulching.
Empty Aisles and Falling Sales
Garden centres found that extreme heat does not automatically boost business—even for products like shade sails and watering cans. Trade body figures showed garden centre visits fell roughly 2% in June compared with the same month last year, with gardening sales down as much as 13% against 2024 benchmarks. The pattern mirrored the broader high street: British Retail Consortium data recorded UK-wide footfall dropping 3.4% year-on-year in June, with high streets seeing the sharpest decline—6.2%—as record heat and red weather warnings drove shoppers indoors or online.
Industry analysts point to a structural dilemma: wet springs delay planting and depress early-season sales, then sudden heat spikes create a rush for irrigation equipment and shade plants that arrives too late for garden centres to restock.
A Crisis Beyond British Borders
The disruption stretches across continents. In Western and Eastern Europe, three successive heatwaves deepened one of the most severe droughts on record, drying soils, rivers, and reservoirs from France to Hungary. Wildfires forced mass evacuations in France’s Gironde region and burned well over 100,000 hectares in Spain alone. The Po River in northern Italy ran at historic lows. Scientific attribution studies found that human-caused climate change made this year’s European drought dramatically more likely—tens of times more likely in some regions—and estimates put the human cost at thousands of heat-related deaths across the continent, alongside more than a billion pounds in lost working hours in the UK.
The United States is bracing for its own difficult season. An emerging El Niño pattern and an expanding drought footprint covering most of the lower 48 states have prompted gardening experts to steer growers toward heat-tolerant flowers—zinnias, cosmos, coneflowers, lantana—over thirstier traditional bedding plants. In Pennsylvania, a long-running sunflower festival was scrapped entirely after drought combined with deer damage wiped out the crop before blooming.
Japan, too, forecasts another summer of above-normal temperatures nationwide, with the meteorological agency warning of knock-on effects for crop growth alongside the now-familiar heatstroke alerts.
A New Kind of Gardening
What emerges from this season is less a single freak year than a pattern hardening into a new normal: springs too wet or too cold for plants to establish, followed by heat and drought too severe for them to bloom on schedule. For gardeners, that means rethinking the purpose of a garden—embracing drought-tolerant planting, rainwater harvesting, and greywater reuse not as niche eco-tips but as basic survival strategies.
For institutions like the RHS, it means retrofitting some of the country’s most cherished gardens for scarcity. And for anyone who simply wanted a photograph among the sunflowers this July—in Suffolk or Pennsylvania alike—it has meant a summer of empty fields where the flowers were supposed to be.
